Troubleshooting

Fixes for the problems people hit most: sound, waking up, installing and signing in.

Updated

Find what you see below, then try the fix. Most problems come down to a permission, the microphone, or the internet connection.

Install warnings

The first downloads are not signed yet, so your computer may warn you the first time. This is expected. The download page has the installers once Munu is out.

Mac: “Apple could not verify Munu”

  1. Click Done.
  2. Open System Settings, then Privacy & Security, and scroll down to the message about Munu.
  3. Click Open Anyway and confirm with your password. You only do this once.

Windows: “Windows protected your PC”

  1. Click More info.
  2. Click Run anyway.
  3. If your browser asks whether to keep the download, choose Keep.

Not sure your Mac is supported? Open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac. A Chip line means Apple silicon, which Munu supports. A Processor line means Intel, which is not supported yet.

Sign-in code problems

  • The code does not arrive. Look in your spam folder. It can take up to a minute.
  • The code is wrong or has expired. Munu says so and helps you try again. You can paste the code with a space or a dash in it, because Munu uses only the digits.
  • You typed the wrong email. Click Use a different email.
  • “Free trials from this network are used up today.” See the account messages.

The microphone shows no sound

  • Mac. System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone, then switch on Munu. Quit Munu from its menu and open it again.
  • Windows. Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone: allow microphone access and allow desktop apps.
  • On both: check the right microphone is chosen in Settings > Voice, and that it is not muted. On a Mac, the menu-bar icon must say Ready, not Microphone off. If it says Microphone off, you chose Mute microphone. Choose it again to turn the microphone on.

Voice and waking

If Munu did not hear you, just say it again, starting with the name. A repeat is heard.

Voice problems and fixes
What you seeWhat to do
Munu does not answer when I say its nameOn a Mac, check the menu-bar icon says Ready, not Microphone off. Say “Munu, …” clearly and a bit closer to the microphone. Allow the microphone (see below). Try another microphone in Settings > Voice. If the name still does not wake it, let Munu learn your voice: Settings > Voice > Run the checks, then Start on the “Say Munu” page.
The notice “The microphone delivers only silence…”Munu gets no sound. Allow Munu in the system microphone settings, then quit Munu from the menu and open it again. Also check the right microphone is chosen in Settings > Voice and that it is not muted on the computer.
Munu says “I can’t hear right now.”The speech service is not answering. Wait a few seconds and say it again. See the next row.
The notice “The speech service can’t be reached; retrying.”Munu could not reach the internet or the speech service. Check your Wi-Fi. Munu retries by itself. Say it again when it is back.
It hears itself or answers its own voiceUse headphones, or turn the speaker down.
Munu misses part of my sentenceSay the name and the question together, then finish the sentence before you pause for long. A pause of more than a second or so ends your question.
“Munu, open …” says it could not find the appUse the name the app has in your Start menu or Applications folder.
“Voice is busy right now” or “You have used all of today’s voice time”The speech service is full for now, or you reached the daily voice limit. Try again in a little while, or tomorrow.

For the ways to wake Munu and the phrases it knows, read Talking to Munu.

Trial and account messages

Trial and account messages and fixes
What you seeWhat to do
“Your free trial has ended.” or “Your sign-in has ended.”The trial is over, or you were signed out. Open Settings > Account to see the days and included use left, or to sign in again. When the included use runs out, you can wait for the reset or click Use my own OpenRouter account. See pricing for the plans.
“Free trials from this network are used up today” (or “from that email domain”)Munu limits how many free trials start each day from one network or one email domain. Try again tomorrow, or use a different email. You can also upgrade to Munu Pro in the meantime.

Hand gestures

Hand gesture problems and fixes
What you seeWhat to do
Gestures do not track my handsPut even light on your hands, sit about an arm’s length away, and keep your whole hand in view. Check hand control is on (the Hand control item in the Munu menu). Say “Munu, show my camera” to see what Munu sees.
“Hand gestures need a Mac with Apple silicon.”Your Mac has an Intel chip. Hand gestures are not available on it. Everything else works.
No camera, or the camera is in useClose other apps that use the camera, such as video calls. Allow Munu in the system camera settings. With more than one camera, choose Next camera in the Hand control menu, or pick one in Settings > General. Munu keeps trying every few seconds.
Hands are seen but the pointer does not moveYou need PC control (both thumbs up). Check Let gestures move the pointer is on in Settings > General. On a Mac, allow Munu in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Accessibility, then quit Munu and open it again. On Windows, a window running as administrator cannot be controlled by gestures.
Everything went grey or the dots vanishedGestures are off (both thumbs down) or paused (crossed arms). Both thumbs up switches PC control back on. Cross your arms once more to un-pause.
Cards on the glass do not respond to my handHand control must be on and not paused. Put your hand over the card, and use a slow, clear pinch. In PC control, a card responds only when your hand is over it.
The pointer cannot reach the edges of the screenCalibrate your hands: Settings > General > Calibrate my hands, or say “Munu, calibrate my hands”.
“Hand gestures couldn’t start.”Something went wrong loading the hand tracker, for example a damaged install. The rest of Munu keeps working. Turn hand control off and on again, or reinstall Munu.

For modes, gestures and calibration, read Hand control.

Your notes are safe. They are ordinary files in a folder on your computer, so a problem with the app does not touch them. See where everything lives.

Say its name. It answers.

Munu is a desktop voice assistant for Windows and Mac, with memory you own and hand control through your webcam.
